Free is good. I love free. I'm sure you're here because you love free stuff. It has been said that nothing in life is free. I'm not sure I believe that. There are some things in life (and on the 'net) that are completely free. Many times "free" simply means a free trial, which lasts for a certain time period, then you have to pay to continue to use the product of service. This is a common marketing method for software--they lure you in with a free trial, then the software is disabled after 30 days, so you have to buy a license to continue using it. A lot of times you are on your honor to pay, but the software or product continues to work regardless of whether you actually pay for it or not.
A big trend you've probably seen on the Internet is that of offering something free in exchange for permission to market something else to you. You have to understand that there are economic reasons behind these companies free offers. They give you something for free that maybe costs them $20 because they make $100 by selling ads to companies who want your email or mailing address along with permission to market to you. If you don't mind advertisements (sometimes a lot of them), this can be a good way to get a lot of free stuff. Sometimes you get free stuff for filling out a survey or giving some other kind of useful information to a company. Other times you can get a free sample simply because they have a new product or service they they're trying to get out into the marketplace.
